Michael and Angela Ashby -Founders and Directors

Michael has had a deep interest in trees for as long as he can remember. He started his own forestry tree nursery at the age of 19.

He first became interested in techniques of accelerated tree seedling growing in the late 1980's but could not find any single growing system that made it fully viable.

Appointed Assistant Nursery Manager for Trees Please Ltd. at Corbridge in October 2013. In April 2014 he was promoted to the position of Nursery Manager and he continued to promote and expand the system of sowing conifer seedlings in plug trays that was showing great promise. Despite his best efforts to keep the nursery running smoothly following the catastrophic flood damage caused by Storm Desmond in December 2015 he was made redundant in June 2016.

Michael and Angela started their own tree nursery in the spring of 2017. Cumbria Tree Growers grows a wide range of trees for farm and woodland planting together with a wide range of native hedging.

Angela Ashby is also a Director of Cumbria Tree Growers Ltd. She runs our administration and also assists with all field operations in the nursery such as seed sowing, grading, lifting etc.  (except for hand weeding which she detests)  It’s widely accepted within the company that she makes the straightest seedbeds.
